Tuesday Poem: Mermaids, Sea

Emily Dickinson today. Because sometimes you just need a bit of Emily.

I started Early--Took my Dog--
And visited the Sea--
The Mermaids in the Basement
Came out to look at me--

And Frigates--in the Upper Floor
Extended Hempen Hands--
Presuming Me to be a Mouse--
Aground--upon the Sands--

But no Man moved Me--till the Tide
Went past my simple Shoe--
And past my Apron--and my Belt
And past my Bodice--too--

And made as He would eat me up--
As wholly as a Dew
Upon a Dandelion's Sleeve--
And then--I started--too--

And He--He followed--close behind-
I felt His Silver Heel
Upon my Ankle--Then my Shoes
Would overflow with Pearl--

Until We met the Solid Town--
No One He seemed to know
And bowing--with a Mighty look--
At me--The Sea withdrew--

For each ecstatic instant
We must an anguish pay
In keen and quivering ratio
To the ecstasy

I wonder how badly the unhappy gibbon outside in my car is going to have to beat me to equal my enjoyment of your Tuesday poems (I see him through the office window). Quite badly, I imagine. But where did the gibbon come from? And why so angry? How did he get in there?!

I love that poem. And I wish I could show you that beach while your in this most wonderful of countries. Alas it is just too far away for a day trip.
