Minders, Madame

On the docket over the past couple of weeks:
Heaps (and heaps) about American children's lit, from puritans to Potter.

Silly old Emma.

This recommendation from sweet Laura caused me to stay up all night reading under the covers with a flashlight. It's like The Most Dangerous Game. With teens.*

*A good idea: Maybe New York could instate its own version of the Hunger Games, giving its youth something to DO besides be disgusting on subways?**
**I do not think you would think I was mean if you saw the things they are doing to one another down there.

That first book just reminded me of reading Little House on the Prairie. The scenes where they learn to read. With primers. Or did I invent that? I love children's literature. Even now I could tell you the books I remember from my own childhood, and all the ones I loved reading to my children.

One time I saw a kid touch the subway floor and then lick his entire palm. New Yorkers have immune systems of steel. His mother didn't even notice.

ooh, gross.

I'm delurking to say that I LOVED The Hunger Games and like you, had to read it through the night b/c I just could not put it down. I can't wait until the sequel.

(Between my love for this series, Potter and Twilight, I'm wondering if I should stick to teen fiction from now on)

Yes there are primers, LPC. I too learned to read from a primer. I think I realized that was old-fashiondy about two years ago.

That is not the kind of gross I am talking about, Mouse.

Thanks for the de-lurk, E. Yessssss teen books. And you've read The Golden Compass, et al., right?

I had Dick and Jane. And Spot. The illustrations were just lovely. I even liked the movie of the Golden Compass. The alcoholic Swedish bear in particular. Now my curiousity is piqued about NYC youth. Probably best to leave it alone.

oh, Little House on the Prairie and The Golden Compass, my favourites. I too love the alcoholic bear, I want one.

Scottish teenagers are disgusting too, I feel like I need to visit some sort of clinic just because I shared a train carriage with them.

Amanda, you're the second person in a week to tell me to read The Golden Compass series. I'll take that as a sign and visit the library this weekend!

I think Emma looks a little bit like Helena Bonham Carter in that edition. (Love the blog!)
