Whispers, Slips

Here is what I would like to know: How are we all dealing with breezy summer dresses that have no lining so that when you wear them the sun shines through and shows everything off? Also, all of those adorable, unlined jersey-knit dresses that stick to your undies. What of those?

I know the obvious answer is "wear a slip." But really? Are we actually wearing slips? Isn't the point of donning a breezy, whispery summer gown the antitheses of everything the wearing-under-clothes slip stands for? Isn't the point feeling like taking over the world? ISN'T IT? And do YOU feel like taking over the world when you're worried about your slip showing or wishing the icky poly-blend would stop making you sweaty? I thought not.

So HOW are all of you wearing these flowy little summer-affair dresses? Because I see you every day on the street wearing them. I SEE you in your unlined cotton, in your jersey knit, and you look fabulous. Please spill. And please do not mention leggings.
{And I'm sorry about no pictures. Pictures are pretty. I will be a better picture-finder next week.}

I honestly wouldn't know, being how I live in a god forsaken country without sunshine. But I would imagine - really big pants. Like Bridget Jones style pants(which I love!), pantsso big that they're almost shorts so that if they become visible you can totally shrug and say 'yeah well, they're huge, of course your supposed to be able to see them.'

Oh I like big pants.

Slips are yucky. My Mum's always trying to get me to wear one but eugh, shudder.

to prevent the sunlight-related princess di moments - wow, i have no idea. i used to point dresses like those out to my mum in the store: "what does one wear with that?!" "a smile," said she.

on the clingy knit numbers, i fear the situation often calls for a thong. i'm not happy about it, but they are world-conquering in their own way.

I have absolutely no idea how to answer either of those questions, but am eagerly awaiting someone who will provide a solution. Someone must know!

I wear "Barbie bottoms."

Something in a nude color like Spanx or any knockoff that is out in the market-buy it one size larger than recommended for comfort and coverage instead of control.

Let the sun shine.....

I don't know what you do about those thin see through dresses.

I have a jersey knit dress I love and I've done some serious experimenting (thong vs. large undies) and I've definitely gone in favor of the large ones. I think it depends on the dress, but mine is flowy enough that if I'm wearing boyshort type things under, it doesn't show.

Slip. Sorry, but that's how it rolls. So yes, we are really wearing slips.

Just reading the thread here. I have to say. big undies don't help really, because the problem is the seeing LEGS, CROTCH shadow. It's not really the panty line. And the shadow has got to be lined, or the city will be unkind to you.

Trust me.

P and Le, I'm not sure I can rock those sorts of knickers. I'm just. not. sure. I. can.

Unless they have lots of ruffles on the bum. In which case I cannot really wear them under things.

DOWN WITH SLIPS. Boo.

i wear one of these dresses nearly every day. I wear a slip. lol. It's really not a burden at all. i like the feeling of security.

oh- and my slips are made of natural silk and are always 2-3 inches shorter than the given skirt. DUH

I pondered the same thing last summer. A thong will show through the jersey, so if you must forsake the slip then go with boy shorts.

As far as the see through sundress, I wear a bathing suit, and never wear the dress anywhere but the beach. Which is actually quite a trek from way up here in Harlem.

So... with the jersey knit. Victoria's Secret makes a great little boy short in a stretchy/silky fabric. (I could run and see technically what it is, but the stairs are long, and the dresser is far.) I use the snot out of my anti-static spray, and there you go.

Or... (Can we all keep a secret on a public blog? Good.) ... if I'm all in a tither about panty lines, sometimes I just don't even WEAR underwear. It's very freeing, I tell you. Very.

As with the little sundresses... I've wondered about this, too. I've stuck with the lined ones because I've seen two many girls with the shadow thing going on so severely I almost think I can see all their bits and pieces. But even lined ones at times show a slight shadow, and then I just say heck with it. What's a girl gonna do?

Good fashion question.

Nothing wrong with a slip, 'Manda, just get a nice silk one. Very retro chic. You'll enjoy wandering around your apartment in nothing but. And think how freeing it will be to go sans slip on the beach, with the wind in your hair?

Sometimes you can't be freed until you have something to be freed from.

I've never had a slip. I quite like the idea of a silk one, but I don't remember ever getting dressed and thinking "this needs a slip."

Perhaps I'm a bit of a hussy, but thus far I've never felt the legs-crotch-shadow thing to be a problem. You have a nice legs-crotch area, do you not? We're only talking about a shadow here, a suggestion, and on a summer's day, not at a formal event.

Ok, so I'm a hussy. But I'd be wearing big pants too, for the record.

there's obviously some fashion happening in nyc that hasn't made it to LA. or maybe I ought to leave the house more often.

Meg said...

Um. Cate. You clearly don't spend a lot of time on the NYC subway. A girl can't eat and apple there, because men will yell, "I wish I WERE that apple and you were biting off a peice of me!" And then start advancing. It's lovely. I mean, I was never flashed, but I look relativly agressive on the Subway.

Anyway... the suggestion of a crotch shadow? That is not something you want to leave the house with in NYC. LA (ESB) is fine, with the driving, and the beach proximity. NYC, no.

PS
This is worse if you live in the outer broughs. Much more subway time.
