Can we have a little chat, please? Because I am having a hard time with this one:
I do not wish to slather my armpits in aluminum and parabens. Parabens are bad. Aluminum is bad. But I also do not wish to be a little sticky or a little stinky, which is what I have been being since I stopped using Secret Powder Fresh. So far, I have tried Alba Aloe Deoderant (sticky, stinky), Alba Tea Tree deoderant (not sticky, but stinky), and Kiss My Face Liquid Rock (not too sticky or stinky, but smells a little like bug spray). So excuse me but how are we all staying aluminum and paraben-free and not being sticky, stinko? Hm?

If you find one, let me know.
Boyfriend uses Tom's of Maine, and he is neither sticky or stinky, but he's not really stinky without deodorant, either.
I have some opinions on this matter.
H-town insisted that I stop using the bad stuff. He told me that while he is willing to change my diaper should I be struck with Alzheimer's, he would really rather not. (Plus he swears he doesn't mind me a little stinky.)
Anyhoo, I've tried a lot of natural deodorants. The Albas, sadly, don't work for me either. I find Tom's Honeysuckle Rose to be the best.
I'm looking forward to see what people have to say about this! I've tried several, and didn't like any of them. Finally I just gave up and switched back to the aluminum-y paraben-y kind. I teach, and the last thing I want is to worry about sweating in front of my students. I'd love an alternative, though!
My esthetician friend swears by witch hazel. Mix with essential oil of your choosing and spray pits. I have not tried this.
I use Lush's Aromacreme. love it. you just take a small piece, and rub it on your armpit. slightly floral scent, but I really like it.

That is making sense about the witch hazel, east side. It closes your pores. Meglet, your aromacreme is sold out everywhere online. Whole Foods? From whence does it come?
what a bust it is sold out! I emailed them and asked when it will be available, I'll report back. I know it is kind of pricey, but it seriously last forever. It is only available in lush stores or online. Avoid the aromaco at all costs, it is a patcholli nightmare.
Hello! So I actually started making my own deodorant a while back. I was hesitant about it being a bit...er..."hippie" and not actually stink-reducing, but I've actually been really happy with it! I haven't tested it in the hot days of summer yet, but no complaints this fall and winter. It's also super easy and cheap to make.
Here's the recipe I've been following, which is very similar to Lush's aromacreme: http://angrychicken.typepad.com/angry_chicken/2008/07/homemade-deodor.html
I use tea tree as the primary essential oil since it has disinfectant properties, and then I add something pretty-smelling to take the edge off.
And if you try it once and don't like it, you can always use the leftover supplies to make lip balm!
hmm..not sure if that DIY deodorant link will work. If not, just google "Angry Chicken Deodorant" and it should be one of the first links to come up. (The blog is called "Angry Chicken" - it's not deodorant for angry chickens!)
Nice, Emma. I bet coconut oil would make it more spreadable.
i use the same as esb: honeysuckle tom's. it is good enough, generally.
Ditto on the Aromacreme, Meg. I love, love, love it (it's sort of like baby powder plus rosemary plus love), and you really only need a teensy bit, so don't balk at the price.
The DIY route is also another one to take, though it'll be far down my list of DIYs (after the dishwashing detergent.)
I'm currently using the Kiss My Face liquid rock, but I used to love Tom's of Maine. Right up until they "improved" it. The hops did not agree with me and made my skin super irritated.
I'm still on the hunt. The liquid works well enough, but it's not good for traveling. I'll have to check some of these out.
This might not be helpful, but I just don't. I'm not hippy like that just lazy, and not that sweaty. I mean to, but then I never remember and it all seems to work out. It might be worth a try?
Meg, that is not helpful. What, do you subsist on a diet of sweet-smelling fruits and vegetables?
Some of us bourbon + steak people smell a little.
Um. No that doesn't so much work for me, Meg. I'm glad you have such sweet pits, though.
I am no chemist, but I am living my life on the basis that Old Spice deodorant stick (not anti-persp) has no aluminium in it. It thick enough to cover any kind of armpit, old school and I love it.
I use lush's aromacreme and while it works I think it smells like old people. I've been meaning to try making my own since I read about Angry Chicken's because the fact that my armpits smell like a retirement home is bugging me but I'm too lazy.
